Sugar free gums according to ADA can have sweeteners such as polyol, a group of sweeteners that has alcohol attached to it. When you see a word with “ol”, that would be the sweeteners. Names such as xylitol and sorbitol are part of the polyol family. Another type of sweetener aspartame can be in sugar free gums. All these sweeteners do not give energy to bacteria that causes tooth decay.
Most of us would know that ADA award ADA seal to toothpaste and mouthwash for their efficacy. ADA also award ADA seal to chewing gums, but so far only for sugar free gums.
According to FDA, Benzocaine should not be use on children under 2 years because of significant risk for methemoglobinemia, a life threatening situation.
